Being a trade show attendee will give you the false impression that you know what it is like to be a trade show exhibitor. You may even think that you know how to rule the roost and get the most exposure. All it takes is one time as an exhibitor to show you just how wrong of an assumption this really is. The entire feel and vibe of the show changes once you become an exhibitor.
It All Starts Well Before the Show
Preparation is the key to a successful show and there are a couple of ways to properly prepare for any trade show. To-do lists are an excellent start. Create a to-do list for everything that needs to be done in advance of the show. Once you have created that list, it is time to move on to creating a list for the day of the show.
Here are some excellent dos and don’ts for the big day.
- Conversations can lead to interesting leads. Don’t fear talking to attendees. This is the only way you are going to break the ice.
- Name tags are there for a reason. Make sure you address attendees by the name that appears on their name tag. At the same time, make sure your name tag is clearly visible.
- Eye contact is the single best way to reel in trade show attendees.
- Bright colored clothing is a great way to stand out from the crowd and so are bright colored trade show graphics.
Here are a few things you want to avoid the day of the big show.
- Do not bury your face in your smart phone the day of the show and stay far away from the computer.
- Keep the gum at home and make sure you don’t eat or drink while you are talking to attendees.
- Pay close attention to your posture. Having your arms folded or crossed may be comfortable, but it is not inviting.
Getting through your first trade show may be a little tough. Put these ideas into action and you will have a great first show.
