The answer? Absolutely nothing. And yet, we are all guilty of it. As humans, we constantly underestimate how much time we have, how long the work will take to complete, and how well we will feel as the day or week progresses. Some people even go as far as to say they work better under stress; however, scientific studies have shown the opposite to be true. According to procrastination.com, what we feel when a deadline fast approaches can create “fertile grounds for stress, guilt, and ineffectiveness” instead of the expected or anticipated adrenaline rush.
Whether seemingly subconsciously or purposefully, you can procrastinate anything. More often than not, we often procrastinate unpleasant things. Perhaps you have to call your mother-in-law to discuss a family issue, come up with a presentation on an uninteresting topic, or do your taxes. Either way, delaying the inevitable has a price. Interestingly enough, scientists say procrastination is not a time-management problem, but an emotion-management problem. I didn’t see that one coming. Dr. Tim Pychyl, professor of psychology and member of the Procrastination Research Group at Carleton University believes “Procrastination isn’t a unique character flaw or a mysterious curse on your ability to manage time, but a way of coping with challenging emotions and negative moods induced by certain tasks — boredom, anxiety, insecurity, frustration, resentment, self-doubt and beyond.”
In a nutshell, this would mean that we procrastinate because we don’t like how the topic, subject, or goal makes us feel in the short-term. So, to beat your procrastination habit, it’s imperative to focus on the bigger picture. Instead of avoiding the topic at hand, try to visualize how you will feel once you’ve tackled the subject matter and no longer have it weighing you down. It’s also important to remember that avoidance is not a proper reward. The next time you find yourself cleaning out your garage instead of writing that important e-mail, try to keep your future self in mind and skip the antics.
