There’s something about lighting that sets the tone, no matter the venue. There are several reasons why lighting is important at a trade show or event. Many companies miss the opportunity to create the right mood and communicate the right message with appropriate lighting. Here are some of the things you should know about trade show lighting before you design your next exhibit.
Types of Lighting
Understanding the major types of lighting used at trade shows will help you choose the right light for your needs. There are four major types including:
- High Activity Lighting – This type of lighting is used to draw attention. It may be used to direct trade show attendees to a product or a special event.
- Case and Shelf Lighting – Traditional to a retail environment, case and shelf lighting provides a way to spotlight specific products or information at a trade show.
- Accent Lighting – Showing off special features or communicating an important message with signage is usually done through accent lighting.
- Ambient Lighting – Ambient lighting is the main lighting used within an event or exhibit. It sets the mood for attendees.
Ballyhoo is an event lighting effect that involves fast movements, intensity changes and a variety of colors, which all help to build excitement and celebration during an event. Used in collaboration with smoke or haze, shafts of light will appear to punch through to all corners of the function space.
A chase is an electrical application where strings of adjacent light bulbs cycle on and off frequently to give the illusion of lights moving along the string.
The magic of gobos is that you can not only project simple messages or names, but can also create environments and scenery for an incredibly low cost. Fundamentally, gobos are a steel or glass stencil that blocks and allows light through. Where there is a solid image, the light is blocked, but where it is open or more transparent light will pass through the gobo. The projection will depend upon the pattern you choose from pre-designed stock gobos or your own custom designed gobo with your logo or business name.
What Trade Show Lighting Does for Your Exhibit
When you choose the right type of lighting for your trade show exhibit or event, you gain many advantages. Lighting isn’t one-size-fits-all, however. It’s important to match the correct lighting with the correct exhibit or venue. When this happens, some of the benefits you gain are:
- Helping to define your brand and overall image

- Creating a visual enhancement for products and important information
